Hello, my friends, and welcome back to Not Another Mindset Show. I’m your host, Dr. Casey Joe. My goal with this podcast is to take the science of mindset and behavior change and distill it down into actionable takeaways for you. Together, we’re going to unpack research around motivation, self sabotage, willpower, and so much more.

And we’re going to take all of that and translate it into. strategies you can immediately apply to your health, fitness, relationships, business, marketing clients, all of the things. But just to be clear, it’s not all serious and sciency around here. We’re going to have a ton of fun too. And I’m so excited to share all of

this with you.

All right, let’s go ahead and get into the episode. Hello, hello, and welcome back to Not Another Mindset Show. Before we dive in. I have a very important, very exciting announcement. This Thursday, we are starting the free three part video series called The Coaching Code. This is a three part series that I’ve ran in the past and have continued to kind of make tweaks to.

We’ve had close to 10, 000 views. 10, 000 coaches go through the coaching code in the past, and like I said, we, we keep running it again and again because people love it so much and we just keep making it better and better. And so this is our first run of the coaching code this year in 2025. We’re getting started on March 13th.

We have our second call on the 18th, and then the final call is Thursday the 20th. So it’s like a Thursday, Tuesday, Thursday, week and a half type of ordeal. Like I said, they are totally free. And it is live and it’s live, which makes it so much more fun because as we’re talking mindset, behavior change, psychology, and all of the strategies and practices that you can use with your clients, which is what the coaching code is all about.

You get to ask questions. You get to bring your client cases to the calls. You and I get to hang out live. And also. It’s not just me. It’s going to be thousands of other coaches too. And on those live calls, it’s just really great because you get to interact, like I said, with me, but also with the other coaches.

So it’s a way for you to hear what else is going on in the industry, get support with your clients, and of course, nerd out on the science of mindset, behavior change, and psychology. So you’re not going to want to miss this. We’re also giving away like thousands of dollars worth of prizes because we have some like assignments and things for you to actually take the content that you’re learning and start to apply it in real time.

So the coaching code, I have the link in the show notes for you to register. Again, it’s totally free. If you’re listening to this, Um, past the first call, so past March 13th. No big deal. You can catch up on the recordings. You can join us live for the, for the other calls. If you miss all of them, that’s okay.

You can catch the recording still. Just get in there as soon as you can and join us inside the coaching code. And today. In today’s episode, I’m going to give you a rundown on a framework. This is a framework that I’ve used for years now, honestly. And I developed it as sort of a way to simplify a lot of what I’ve learned, both inside my PhD, just kind of perusing what I know about behavior change and pulling out the specific things that are important for coaches when they’re working with their clients.

And then also the decade that I’ve been coaching inside the coaching industry, like just coaching myself, working with clients over the years and pull that all together to create this framework. And it is called the GROW model. I use it inside HMCC. It’s kind of how HMCC, the Health Mindset Coaching Certification is structured.

It’s also what has driven the structure of my coaching and the coaching inside my own coaching business for years. So I’m going to run through that framework with you and also inside the coaching code, that free three part training series I was mentioning. I also talk about the GROW model in there and we kind of go into more depth with each of the pillars inside of the model in the coaching code.

So today I’m going to kind of lay the foundation and kind of get you started with explaining each of the four pillars of the GROW model and then giving you a specific tool that you can use with your clients with each one of those pillars. All right, so. The pillars that we have here, the GROW model, G stands for Guidance, R is for Relationship, O is for Optimization, and W is for Wisdom.

So we’re going to walk through all four of those, and like I said, give you a little bit of a tool that you can apply right away. With your clients. Okay, so G is for guidance. And this is a, I was gonna say is, is this the most important one? No, they’re all equally important. That’s why they’re all part of the framework.

But this is such a, it, it really is like a guiding principle. Guidance is the guiding principle or should be inside of your coaching practices because at the end of the day. Really good, really effective coaching is not about telling your clients what to do, prescribing them plans and supplements and nutrition protocols.

It’s not about just telling them to do this or that or write a training plan. It’s about guiding them. And you can coach without proper guidance. You can educate. You can provide a plan. You can make adjustments to that plan, you can communicate with them, you can over communicate with them, and you could still not actually be providing proper guidance.

So, because we’re working with behavior change, and I’m gonna go ahead and assume that anyone listening to this is focusing on behavior change, you’re actually helping your clients create a healthier lifestyle and make changes to their lifestyle that actually last. We’re not, you know, in the business of quick fixes or 30 day this, 21 day that.

No, we want to actually make changes. real changes in the lives of these people that we’re working with. And because of that, we need to guide. Honestly, not just coach. We need to guide. So what is guidance if it’s not coaching? And a big part of guidance is really trying to understand your client in, in the most the fullest capacity.

So you also, with that, need to understand that you don’t have all of the information to know your client in the fullest capacity. They do. They have all of the information, actually. And it’s your job as the coach to learn what that information is, to better understand your clients, the goals that they have, the strategies that they used in the past, strategies they want to try.

Their lifestyle, their schedules, their preferences, their values, their interests, all of that stuff. goes into the coaching relationship. And I know that you know this. However, what can end up happening, especially if you’re a more seasoned coach and you’ve worked with a lot of clients, or you may just be like projecting yourself onto your clients, which we tend to do because a lot of us are coaches because we’ve gone through all of this stuff ourselves and now we want to help other people do the same.

We make assumptions. We make assumptions that we know what our clients need, that we know about their struggles because it’s just like all of the other clients. And there are often similarities, right? Especially if you have like a specific ideal client avatar that you are working with. A lot of times you will see similar struggles and issues, but that doesn’t mean that just because someone’s seems to be struggling with the same thing that they need the same solution.

So guidance is really about fully understanding your client and understanding that they have the information about themselves and you don’t. So with that, we need to do a lot more question asking and a lot more listening rather than just telling them what to do. You may hear your clients say things like, just like that they can’t stick to the plan, that they’re struggling, that they have low motivation, that they’re self sabotaging themselves, or you’re seeing this happen, you know, they’re not necessarily saying it, but usually there’s, there’s clues within what they’re saying and what they’re doing, and uh, yeah.

Something I hear coaches say as a result of that is I gave my client the perfect plan and it’s based on everything from her intake form and she just won’t follow it through with it. She won’t stick with it or I don’t understand why my client is paying me. If they’re not going to stick to the plan, like, I have, I have nothing to do with this, right?

Like, I don’t know, my hands are tied, like, I don’t know what to do anymore. Like, you’re the one paying me, what am I supposed to do here? And this is such a common frustration in the coaching industry. And it really sucks because it’s coaches who, Really, really care and really wanna help their clients that often end up in these positions, like unable to help, and then they get frustrated and then they feel like a bad coach.

And then maybe they even stop coaching altogether, which I’ve definitely seen happen before. And instead, if we could just focus more on guiding rather than just prescribing and instructing and telling our clients what to do. A lot of this stuff could be avoided, and it’s not, not as easy as just providing more guidance, right?

You might be listening to this like, yeah, easier said than done, or like there’s a lot more to it, and obviously we got more pillars to go through. Okay, this is pillar number one, but that’s a really, really big part of it. So the tool that I have for you, so kind of taking everything that I just said and putting it into an actual tangible strategy that you can use, is Kind of counterintuitive.

Honestly, all of the tools that I have are counterintuitive and that makes sense because this isn’t the typical way to coach. It’s the more effective way to coach, but it’s not super common and it’s not super typical. So, this first tool that I have for you under the pillar of guidance is to ask your client what they would do if they were the coach.

So, let’s say you have, and I wouldn’t, here’s the thing with this tool, I wouldn’t use it all of the time and I wouldn’t, use it frequently, especially with the same client, because they’re going to be like, okay, here we go again. You’re just turning, turning the conversation back on to me. But if you have a client who maybe has a pattern of self sabotage or it’s like a few weeks on plan and then like two weeks off, you know, one step forward, two steps back, some type of thing, going to them and saying, Hey, I would love just like to just have you humor me for a second.

If we swapped roles and you were now the coach in this situation and you’re looking at the check ins from the client, what do you think you would say to yourself as the client? What would that, what would that look like? What would you say? Again, counterintuitive, right, because you’re the coach, so ultimately shouldn’t you have the answers?

But this plays into the idea that your client probably has more answers than you realize or they realize. And so it’s a matter of kind of like getting that out of them, you know? So with that, I’ve tried this so many times with my own clients, and it’s always been number one, different, depending on the person.

Remember, everybody, everybody is different, even if the struggle is the same. And number two has been so insightful. So even if the client comes back and says, you know, if I was the coach in this situation, I would probably create something more lenient and more flexible and would make it so on the weekends, I wouldn’t have to worry so much.

And it’s like, whoa, whoa, whoa, okay, like let’s, let’s talk about that. Let’s talk about what that could look like. You may get some pushback from clients. And they’ll say something like, Oh, but you’re the coach, like, I don’t know. That’s why I’m stuck in this situation is because I don’t know what to do. And I hired you because I need your help.

And this is where you can share like, Yes, absolutely. I’m here for you. However, again, I would really, really love to hear what comes up for you when I ask this question beyond like the fact that you’re not a coach. Just anything and anything, anything and everything that Applies in this situation and really, really try to get some semblance of an answer from them because there’s usually something there.

There’s usually something there that you can work with, and it just kind of gets them thinking about like your position as the coach too, and there’s probably some, I don’t want to say unmet expectations, but there may be some like underlying expectations or beliefs of what you as the coach are supposed to do for them and that can also come up in this.

Type of question. So it can be really, really helpful for that too. Okay, I gotta take a quick pause here to talk to you about something very important. Your coaching forms. You know, like your application form, check in forms, intake forms. You, my friend, are probably missing out on a huge opportunity here.

Because most coaches see these forms as nothing but information gatherers. And I’m here to tell you, they should be doing so much better. More for you, your coaching forms should be helping your clients shift their mindset and make behavior changes that actually last. And your forms really do have the power to do that.

And I want to show you exactly how inside my recently updated and upgraded DIY workshop mini series, transform your forms. This DIY program is a short series of video trainings from me where you’ll learn exactly how to use the science of mindset and behavior change in your coaching forms. So yes, we’re talking application form, intake forms, check in forms, and we’ll even dive into your sales calls and exit surveys.

This is the easiest, fastest, and most affordable way to start including science backed strategies into your coaching practices. So it’s no wonder Transform Your Forms is actually my most popular DIY program. And now with these new updates, it’s even better than ever. Over 700 coaches have already picked up this workshop series.

Check out the link in the show notes to learn more. Okay, the next pillar of the GROW model is R, which is for relationship. I think we all understand, and especially if you’re listening to this podcast, you understand that The relationship that you have with your clients is so, so, so crucial. And ultimately, at the end of the day, if you want, if you want a client to listen to you, I don’t really like saying that because it kind of, again, puts you in this, like, authoritative role where you’re telling your clients what to do and they just need to listen to you, which doesn’t really work that well.

Like, it just doesn’t, especially, again, if we’re talking about behavior change and, like, lifestyle modification. And we really need. Uh, a client to trust us, and we need to have a connection with our clients if we want them to really hear us out. In fact, I kind of have like a An interesting example that just popped into my head.

It’s sort of like a parallel example, but I have historically for the last like, honestly, like four years struggled with my skin. I’m like, hopefully I look all right on camera currently for those of you watching on YouTube. Um, but ever since getting off of hormonal birth control, my skin has just been super erratic.

Um, Acne popping up when I don’t understand why or how and then it’ll go away and then it’ll come back and it’s just been super frustrating and recently found someone in Austin who is like an acne and skin care specialist and went and had an appointment with her and one of my other friends also was seeing her and we’re just talking about our experience and how she made us feel like really heard and cared for that made us so excited and my friend was saying that she went to a different great.

skin care specialist a while ago who kind of felt like she was offering the same type of service, the same type of products, same type of like location, like everything was pretty similar except for the fact that this girl just didn’t come off as very Trustworthy, like she didn’t fully know everything that she was talking about, didn’t really feel like she took the time to get to know my friend when she did go in for the consultation and like didn’t spend a lot of time like asking the right questions.

And so my friend was like, the difference between these two interactions was so significant. That I’m going with this other girl, even though this other girl is like three times the price, because she doesn’t trust the first girl, because that person did not take the time to build trust and to build a connection.

So, it’s so funny that this, this is literally a conversation I had this morning, and that just like goes to show the difference there. In fact, like, another interesting example, kind of like on the along the lines of charging more, too. I hired a new ads manager at the beginning of last year, and when I was doing interviews, it kind of came down to two different gals, and I loved both of them, and they both had really great, um, portfolios and good recommendations, but I just felt so much more connected and more like Ads manager number one versus two could be like my friend, which sounds funny because do you really need to be like BFFs with your ads manager?

No, but I’m going to work with this person almost every single day for a long period of time And I’m also investing a lot of money To get this person into my business to learn my business to go through these launches with me and all the things like I want It to be a really great cohesive relationship from the get go so they can just continue to to blossom and get easier and also want that person to Um, fit the culture and fit with everybody else on my team.

So ads manager number one cost double of what ads number, ads manager number two cost. Um, just like her, their monthly retainers, right? And I went with ads manager number one for all of those other reasons, you know, it didn’t even really come down to skills and deliverables in that case. So just like something to think about.

there, especially for those of you who are maybe struggling to, like, charge what you feel like your services are worth and all of that, that ultimately, if you can develop trust and a connection and your clients really feel like you have the solution for them, then the difference in 100 per month isn’t going to be one.

Like, there isn’t going to be a difference. So with that said, working with clients, They can feel like they, they are kind of being watched, and they are being careful with what they’re doing because they want to impress you, they don’t want to let you down. If they have a bad week, they may not check in with you, they may be dreading check ins when they do have a bad week, but none of those things should be happening if you have developed this foundation of connection and trust through the relationship that you have.

with your clients. They should be excited to check in with you. They should be looking forward to filling out their check in forms and having a conversation with you even if they had the worst week ever. They should be looking forward to finding solutions with you and sharing with you what happened even though it was a not so great week because they know that you’re going to be able to support them.

They know that they have this connection and trust with you. We don’t ultimately though want our clients to feel super dependent on us and I think that that’s That’s where coaches find this to be tricky because, okay, well, if I’m going to become, like, very close with my clients, I also don’t want them to be, like, blowing up my phone all the time or feeling super dependent on me.

Like, they need to ask me questions all of the time because they do feel so connected and comfortable with me. And of course, yes, there is There is a line there, but we have to remember that humans are social creatures. Like, this dates back to, like, being in tribes. Like, being in tribes, being in small, tight knit communities, like, hundreds and hundreds of years ago.

If we didn’t have that, we would not survive. If you were off on your own in the wilderness, you would not survive. If you had your community, your tribe, Whatever, your group, your family, you would be much more likely to survive, and that’s still very much ingrained in just how we operate. So we really need this.

We need social connection. We need that trust and support, and especially inside the coaching relationship where things can be pretty vulnerable and our clients can be really concerned about how they’re, how they’re looking, how they’re feeling. Like, really run down on all of the different things that they’ve tried.

Like, it’s such a vulnerable position to be in as a client a lot of the time. So When clients feel like they’re connected to us, they trust us, they can be more open with us, and if they can be more open with us in sharing their struggles and asking for help, they will feel more confident in their abilities to come to you, and if they can come to you with questions and they can come to you sharing their struggles, then you can actually support them with those things, which I know you all want to do, and once you can support them with those things.

Obviously more likely to adhere to the plan, and if they’re more likely to adhere to the plan, they’re more likely to be successful. And you can see where this all just stems from, them even feeling like they can trust you and are connected with you in the first place. And I see this a lot too, like, how many times we’ve had clients Join the team and have worked with coaches in the past or maybe like recently came from a coaching experience or even still with a coach and like finishing out the contract and they’re already shopping around, not because they didn’t see results, not because they didn’t learn anything, but because they don’t feel connected to their coach so it can literally see it.

it can literally mean everything. So the tool that I have for you here is to make sure that in your check in form process, whatever, whatever your process is, because we all need structure inside the coaching relationship, right? Like it can’t just be like willy nilly conversations all the time. There’s like a, typically like a standard date time that you check in with each individual person.

So how can we bring The relationship and connection piece into this more structured framework and adding questions to your check in forms or conversations that just. Ask about their lives, ask about what’s going on with them, be sure to touch on things that they’ve shared with you about their lives or things that they’re struggling with outside of just food and exercise.

Make them, make it really clear that you care about them beyond just like a, a number on your spreadsheet, right? Because people do worry about that and they’re valid in their concerns. And I know that you listening to this right now really do care about each and every one of your clients. And the goal should be to make them feel safe.

feel like they are your only client. So how can you do that? Ask more questions, have like, standard questions that you ask about other things that are going on in their lives so you have the ability to then respond to those things and actually connect with them on those deeper levels. Okay, the next pillar of the GROW model is optimization.

We are in the business of prevention and optimization and we have really, really, really cool jobs because of that. You know, compared to the traditional Western medical model that is just all about treating negative symptoms and disease, you go to a doctor when you are already feeling unhealthy in hopes to get back on track to a healthier version, right?

But what we get to do is work with people a lot of the most of the time, especially if we’re talking about like lifestyle modification, weight loss, things like that. Um, some people do have like negative symptoms going on, or maybe you’re someone who helps clients who are dealing with like a PCOS diagnosis or something like that as well.

Like obviously those more medical type concerns still play a role in the health and fitness coaching space. But for the most part, w Even with that, we’re still in this prevention and optimization land, and it’s such a cool place, cool land to live in, because we get to show people how good they’re really supposed to feel.

And it’s not just Striving for this idea of healthy that is really just a lack of negative symptoms. We get to bring them to that next level of optimal health and really, really truly feeling their best. So, in order to do this though and to really focus on optimization, we need to stop focusing on fixing and picking out weaknesses in our clients.

Because again, that’s kind of like, that’s the standard of care for the most part. in the Western medical model. It’s like, well, what are you doing wrong? How do we fix these issues? There’s like, something wrong with you. Yada, yada, yada. And instead, we should be focusing on strengths. We should be focusing on what our clients are already doing well.

What strengths they already have within them that we can pull out and apply to the coaching relationship, to the practices and the healthy habits that we’re trying to instill in their lifestyles. And, This also goes beyond just like nutrition and exercise, but we’re also talking about bringing in people’s values, their mindset, their expectations, their life purpose.

Like, I know that sounds like pretty intense, but it’s the truth and I know, like, raise your hand if, hopefully not if you’re driving, but raise your hand if you have ever, as a nutrition and fitness coach, felt like a life coach. And that’s because all of this stuff is so interconnected and How many times have you heard clients say that now that they’re working on their nutrition and exercise, it’s bleeding over into other areas of their lives?

Like, we have a really cool, but really, truly, we’re responsible for so much stuff. Like, it’s cool, but we’re also responsible. And, That’s a beautiful thing. So the tool I have for you guys here when it comes to optimization is to ask your clients when they’re struggling to adhere to the plan or stick to a new habit or behavior, ask them what good, the good stuff that is coming from their current habit.

Less optimal lifestyle, less healthy habits or behaviors that they have. So, again, this is quite counterintuitive because why the heck would we want to ask our clients about the good stuff that’s coming from the stuff that they want to change, right? So if they are, I don’t know, going to McDonald’s five times per week.

Asking them the good things that come from that seems counterintuitive and seems like why would we want them to like double down and really think about all of the good that comes from that if we want to change it. But what’s great about this is It’s typically already talked about, right? Like, the goal is probably to reduce the McDonald’s consumption and eat healthier, right?

That’s why they’re working with you. But if we ask them to really, for the sake of really understanding better, can you tell me a little bit more as to how going through the drive thru, Really does, like, support you through the week or makes your week better. Like, can you tell me more about this? Like, I truly am just, I would love to better understand this.

And typically they’ll come back and say, oh, I don’t know, it’s cheap, it’s quick, I spend more time with my family, if I can just, like, bring dinner home, all of those things. But as they are describing all of the good things, More often than not, they then backtrack and start to say things like, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other ways to do this.

Or, just because it’s easy and cheap doesn’t mean that that is the best option for me. And I know that, and it is still something that I want to change. So, like I said, more often than not, as they’re describing the good things, they will start, start talking in this way. I say it’s, it’s called change talk.

They’ll start providing change talk into the conversation, essentially. And start going the other direction with it, and then that’s where you can kind of like grasp what they’re saying and continue to have the conversation about it. So, oh, okay, well, tell me a little bit more. Is anything coming up for you of, like, how we could do something differently that is also relatively quick and relatively cheap and relatively easy?

Is there any other options? Like, oh, I don’t know, like, I guess I could, you know, get groceries delivered and we could cook at home together so it could be, like, a family thing. Do you see what I’m, do you see what I’m doing here? Like, I’m, again, Asking them to arrive at this conclusion and also start to develop solutions on their own.

And it’s just through, again, guidance, guiding questions, um, and ultimately helping them optimize on their own rather than you doing it for them. Alright, the final pillar of the GROW model is wisdom. And I did talk about this a little bit. They all kind of work together, but To no surprise, right, that that would only make sense if all the pillars work together for the model.

But, with wisdom. I say wisdom, but with a big thet. Asterisk, because it’s wisdom without being a know it all. You want wisdom without assumptions. There’s a lot of directions we could go here, but same idea that you are the expert on nutrition, exercise, whatever your specific niche is, you are the expert on that, and that is why clients came to you.

But that does not mean you are the expert on your client’s life, and you need to remember that. We also, again, want to watch our assumptions. Something that I say to students inside the health mindset coaching certification all the time is this idea of like sitting on your hands. So if a client is struggling to adhere to the plan, they’re self sabotaging, all or nothing thinking, all of these things that get in the way of them actually making these changes and seeing the results that they’re looking for.

If that is happening, It’s, we are so quick to want to fix the situation. It’s actually called the writing reflex. This is something I talked about inside the motivational interviewing episode. So we have this reflex to like make things right. So instead I would encourage you to first sit on your hands.

And try to ask a question. Try to learn more. Try to better understand the situation before just immediately providing solutions and trying to fix what’s going on. That is going to be so much more effective when it comes to behavior change. You’re supporting autonomy. You’re supporting a growth mindset.

So much good stuff when you sit on your hands first and Ask, you know, what they’ve tried in the past, what they may want to try this time, what’s worked well, what hasn’t worked well, what ideas they have before you immediately tell them. So, the tool I have for you is to ask permission first. And this sounds weird, again, somewhat counterintuitive, because if you’re the coach, obviously your clients are coming to you for answers, for solutions, for strategies, for ideas.

And I’m not saying don’t do those things, but I am saying there’s, there’s some more steps, especially with these clients who have been struggling and have like these repeated patterns of struggle, is to, is to, Instead, again, of immediately providing solutions, ask permission. So this could sound something like, I have some ideas for you, some stuff that’s worked for other clients in the past, but obviously everybody is unique, so I don’t want to make assumptions, and I would love to hear what ideas you have first.

before I provide those ideas. So you can kind of like, okay, like, I would like to get you involved, get your buy in first before I provide anything else. Or you could straight up ask, like, hey, I know everybody is different. I have some ideas for you. Would it be cool if I shared those ideas? It’s possible they won’t work for you or you won’t like them, and that’s okay.

But are you up for that? And they say, yeah, of course, you know, again, kind of like getting that buy in before you just start sharing everything with them. So that, my friends, wraps up the GROW model. Simple. G is for guidance, R is for relationship, O is for optimization, and W is for wisdom. Like I said, this is how HMCC is kind of like structured around this framework.

It is how I’ve structured my coaching. I think at any time, if you are Struggling to help a client thinking through those, guidance, relationship, optimization, wisdom. See maybe what you could be doing differently or what could be inserted into the coaching that would support any of those pillars. Maybe one of those pillars you can see like very clearly you might be thinking of a client right now as I’m speaking of like, yeah, the wisdom piece.

Like I’m definitely really quick to just provide solutions and I’m not actually having a conversation first. Try it. Give it a go. And beyond that, I would love to see you inside The Coaching Code, where we’re going to talk about all of these things and so much more over the course of three full trainings.

So, they’re about an hour long in length. We start Thursday. March 13th. We have another training on Tuesday the 18th and then Thursday the 20th. I’m like trying so hard to not mess up those dates in my head here. So don’t forget to register. It’s entirely free. That link is in the show notes to register.

And yeah, I think that’s all I have for you guys today. I hope this was helpful. I really, I love sharing the Grow Model. I use it all the time in presentations and, um, speeches, guest talks, that sort of thing. It is, again, just like a very effective framework and easy way for you to like clearly see some, some, but like little pieces of behavior change all kind of coming together in a simple model.
