Does Manifestation Work? The Truth About Your RAS and “Reprogramming” Your Brain

Dr. Kasey Jo Orvidas explaining manifestation vs mindset coaching on Not Another Mindset Show

When it comes to manifestation vs mindset coaching, the difference is what you think does the work. Manifestation says your thoughts send a signal and the universe answers. The research says your beliefs matter enormously, but they work by changing how hard you try and how long you stick with something, not by pulling outcomes toward you.

I fell into a real rabbit hole on this one. After recent episodes on NLP and vision boards, I kept running into manifestation and “reprogram your subconscious” content that pulls on real science, like actual brain structures and actual physics, and then makes claims the research doesn’t back up.

I talk about how what you believe affects the actions you take and the success you see, so a lot of what I teach in mindset coaching can get mixed up with manifestation. I wanted to set the record straight. I’m not a physicist and I’m not a manifestation expert, so I built this episode by holding the claims up against the research and seeing what still sticks.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • What a study of over 1,000 people found when researchers compared manifestation beliefs to real-world success
  • What quantum entanglement and the observer effect actually mean, and why they don’t scale up to your goals
  • What the reticular activating system does, and the frequency illusion behind the red car theory
  • What happened when researchers swapped the labels on subliminal self-help tapes
  • Why beliefs still matter, and how self-efficacy actually gets built

Is There Scientific Evidence That Manifestation Works?

Research so far shows that believing in manifestation makes people feel more successful, but it doesn’t make them objectively more successful.

The literal claim behind manifestation is that your thoughts and feelings send a signal to the universe, and the universe sends back matching circumstances. Researchers at the University of Queensland ran three studies with over 1,000 people and built a manifestation scale to measure these beliefs. It has two parts: personal power, like “You can speak success into existence through positive self-talk,” and cosmic collaboration, like “The universe sends you people and events to aid your success.”

About 35% of people had some belief in manifestation. The people who scored high felt more successful and were more confident they’d succeed in the future. But when researchers looked at objective markers like income and education, there was no link to manifestation beliefs. In the researchers’ words, manifestation shows little objective evidence of aiding success.

They also found that people high in manifestation beliefs were more likely to make risky financial bets, believe in getting rich quick, have declared bankruptcy, and own cryptocurrency rather than traditional stocks. That’s a correlational finding, so it doesn’t mean believing in manifestation makes you go bankrupt. The researchers’ best guess is that being overconfident about unlikely success makes you more willing to take risks, and sometimes those risks blow up.

Is Manifestation Based on Quantum Physics?

No. Manifestation borrows the language of quantum physics, but the science doesn’t support the leap from subatomic particles to your paycheck.

Quantum entanglement is a real idea: two things can be mysteriously connected even when they’re far apart. What gets skipped is that this connection is something you can notice, not something you can use. You can’t push your wishes and desires through it.

The observer effect gets borrowed the same way. In manifestation content it turns into “your attention shapes your reality.” But in physics, an observer isn’t a person paying attention. It’s a physical measurement, like an instrument or a detector. All of this happens at the tiniest, most invisible scale imaginable, and there’s no evidence it scales up to you picturing a paycheck and having it show up at your door.

Does the Reticular Activating System Help You Manifest?

The reticular activating system is real, but it doesn’t scan the world for your goals.

The RAS governs arousal, wakefulness, sleep-wake cycles, and sensory gating. Sensory gating is why you can be talking to a friend in a loud bar and still catch the bartender saying your name across the room. The RAS doesn’t understand your dreams, your values, or your vision board.

The red car theory is how the RAS usually gets explained. You buy a red car because it feels unique, and suddenly you see red cars everywhere. That experience is real, but what’s behind it is the frequency illusion, also called the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon. It’s a mix of selective attention and confirmation bias. The red cars were always there. Your attention changed.

Our brains also tend to treat that frequency as meaningful, as if seeing something a lot means it must be a sign. Focusing on a goal can change what you notice, but it doesn’t change what exists, and it doesn’t do the work for you. If you’ve been thinking about launching a new offer and suddenly see other people launching everywhere, that’s your radar switching on. The offer still isn’t going to start itself.

Can You Reprogram Your Subconscious With Subliminal Audio?

The research doesn’t support it. In the best-known study, what changed people’s results was what they expected, not the hidden messages.

Subconscious reprogramming often gets pitched as the more science-backed version of manifestation. The methods include subliminal audio you play while you sleep, tapping on points of your body while repeating phrases, and hypnosis-type audio tracks. All of them promise to rewrite hidden beliefs quickly, below the surface.

In a 1991 study, researchers gave people subliminal self-help tapes that claimed to improve either memory or self-esteem, and had them use the tapes for a month. Then they swapped some of the labels. People reported improvement based on what the label said, not what was on the tape. More than a third of them had an illusion of improvement that matched the label.

This isn’t one lonely study, either. The National Academies of Sciences reviewed the whole body of research and concluded there is no theoretical foundation or experimental evidence that subliminal self-help audio does what it claims.

Manifestation vs Mindset Coaching: Where Beliefs Actually Matter

Beliefs matter enormously. They just work through action, not around it.

What you believe about yourself shapes how you show up, how hard you try, how long you stick with something, and whether you start at all. That’s well supported in behavior change research, especially research on self-efficacy, which is the belief that you can do the thing even when you hit obstacles. When you believe you can do something, you put in more effort and you persist longer.

The key is that self-efficacy is best built by actually doing the thing. The subconscious reprogramming pitch says you can change the belief first, as a shortcut, and the results will follow. The research points the other way: you take the action, you gather evidence, and the belief changes because you proved it to yourself.

This is what mindset coaching actually looks like, and it’s nothing like manifestation. It includes how you reframe a setback, looking at the ways you’ve changed before as evidence you can change again, and moving out of the “this is just who I am” story. All of that helps shift belief, and then belief helps you take more action. It’s based on substance, not crawling into your subconscious while you sleep.

Why Is Manifestation More Appealing Than Mindset Coaching?

I think a lot of the appeal is that it takes responsibility off your plate.

The magic version leaves you waiting. You’re waiting for the universe, for the right frequency, for something else to rewire how you see yourself. If the universe doesn’t give it to you, then it just wasn’t meant for you, and that feels a lot safer than owning the outcome.

The real version puts more of it in your control, which I think is much better news. Focusing on what you want won’t summon it, but it can help you notice opportunities that were already there. Believing you’re capable won’t rewire your reality overnight, but it changes how hard you try and how long you stay in the game when things get hard.

Key Takeaways

  • Believing in manifestation made people feel more successful in research, but it wasn’t linked to objective success like income or education.
  • Quantum entanglement and the observer effect happen at a subatomic scale, and there’s no evidence they scale up to manifesting outcomes.
  • The reticular activating system governs alertness and sensory gating, and it doesn’t scan the world for your goals.
  • The red car effect is the frequency illusion: the red cars were always there, and your attention changed.
  • In a 1991 study, people using subliminal self-help tapes reported improvements that matched the label, not the audio.
  • Self-efficacy is best built by taking action first, which gives you the evidence that changes the belief.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does manifestation actually work?

Research on manifestation beliefs found they made people feel more successful and more confident, but they weren’t linked to objective success like income or education. The researchers concluded manifestation shows little objective evidence of aiding success.

Is the red car theory proof of manifestation?

No. Suddenly seeing red cars everywhere is the frequency illusion, a mix of selective attention and confirmation bias. The cars were always there, and once something is on your radar, you notice it more.

Do subliminal affirmations work?

In a 1991 study, people reported improvements that matched the label on their tape, not the content inside. A National Academies of Sciences review found no theoretical foundation or experimental evidence that subliminal self-help audio does what it claims.

Do beliefs affect success?

Yes. What you believe affects how hard you try, how long you persist, and whether you start at all. Research on self-efficacy shows that people who believe they can do something put in more effort and persist longer.

Your beliefs and expectations really are powerful, and you have more control over them than the magic version suggests. If you want to bring real mindset coaching to your clients instead of manifestation, grab my 5 Free Lessons in Mindset and Behavior Change Coaching.
